Hani's Mission: 1m=1000km
Hani’s Mission
The primary mission that Hani is currently following is the 1m=1000km mission. The physical distance between two people shouldn’t make a difference in how connected these two people can feel. 1000km apart feeling the same as 1m apart is the ultimate goal that Hani is striving for, everything that could bring Hani closer to that goal is of interest.
This mission is based on one assumption: there is a deep feeling of connection that everyone is longing for.
In its essence its a really simple concept. Everyone would choose connection and belonging over all other things. Therefore, companies that offer products or services allowing people to connect more deeply than before contribute to the mission and are something people will use and like. These are the companies Hani is looking for and invests in.
To illustrate that I will not use a company but a movie. Movies are playing into this longing for connection very frequently. Movies are products and the most bought product of all time in the movie industry according to IMDB is Titanic. I will add to that, the concept of “Lollapalooza effect”, a term named by Charlie Munger.
Titanic the movie
In Titanic, there are multiple themes that are present and if I had to give one overarching name to the ensemble of themes I would definitely say: Human connection/love. Let’s see how this theme plays out through out the movie:
Social classes: Jack and Rose are from two completely different, non overlapping, social classes. It is shown and emphasized continuously throughout the movie. The sleeping arrangements on the boat, the dinners, the clothes, the parties, the values, the priority of who gets saved from drowning and who doesn’t, etc.
The two communities Jack And Rose are a part of continuously display the difference between real and fake human connection. Rose’s community lies, betrays, values things over people, is not welcoming to outsiders, shows fake love, cares about money and status only and is not sticking together during dinners and parties or when people need to be saved form drowning. Jack’s community is the complete opposite. They are welcoming, stick together, act together, help each other, show real love and value the now and authenticity over everything else.
A journey: It is a journey on the titanic and a journey of young, innocent and careless love between two people. The titanic is just the explicit image of Jack and Rose’s relationship.
Jack: An adventurous, dedicated, carefree, fearless young boy. He’s honest, true, and authentic with strong values and ethics. He’s good looking, charming and funny. He dedicates himself to love and is pursuing it over everything else. He’s compassionate and understands Rose. The perfect human being so to say, in a world where sparks, spark forever and connections are unbreakable.
Paris the city of romance and love is brought up in the movie. It’s the city Jack is associated with. Jack is also an artist mostly drawing people and through his drawings able to show his compassion and perceptions he has for other people but especially women and children.
Compassion and understanding is a reoccurring theme: the second time Jack and Rose meet and he saves her life it’s all about compassion for Rose. The mother and fiancée don’t have any understanding or compassion. The boat builder has compassion. The older women understands Rose and Jack. Essentially the good people do understand and are compassionate while the bad people don’t.
The unbreakable and the breakable: the Titanic considered unsinkable, breaks. The love and connection between Rose and Jack, lives forever.
There is many more themes and interpretations that could be mentioned but I think this is enough to get my point.
Lollapalooza effect
The Lollapalooza effect can be defined in the following way: “A confluence of factors acting together leading to both, positive and negative results. These factors can be especially powerful drivers of human behaviour.” Originally the term was introduced in the context of psychological drivers. I’m just wondering, what isn’t psychological when it comes to humans?
In the context of Titanic the writers of the movie have been focusing on making individual themes confluence into the overarching theme of love and human connection and the result was positive for sure.
Specific scenes in Titanic: combining movie themes and the Lollapalooza effect
The whole movie is one big scene where all these themes mentioned previously confluence to create one astonishing outcome: the most watched movie of all time.
The most iconic scenes of the movie can also be interpreted in a similar way.
Probably the single most iconic scene of the movie: “Do you trust me? I trust you.”, “I’m flying, Jack.” A big kiss. The beautiful colours in the sky. The music. In this scene trust, the dream of flying, warmth and love all come together to create one beautiful moment.
The second most iconic scene in the movie: the portrait scene. Eroticism, trust, art, youth and beauty all confluence into one powerful scene.
The third most iconic scene in the movie: I will never let go Jack, I promise.
The dedication to love, the promise to never let go, eternity, choosing her survival over Jack’s cause he wanted her to do so, all these themes confluence into one tragic scene.
The scene where old Rose drops the diamond into the sea. Here everything comes together. Love and connection last forever while material things do not.
Takeaway
Movies are really straight forward when it comes to combining themes to create a Lollapalooza effect. Companies are a little trickier to analyse in the same manner when applied to the theme of human connection. Nevertheless that’s at the core of it all and needs to be done for the success of Hani’s mission.
